Wednesday, May 16th at 11am,we had an outstanding groundbreaking ceremony for our facilities improvement. Our board member, Dr. George McKenna as well as our LD West Superintendent Ms. Cheryl P. Hildreth were among the speakers, and the Crenshaw Elite Choir showed out as usual.
Crenshaw is undergoing construction, which will include a new outdoor courtyard, a new synthetic turf football field, resurfacing of all floors and the gymnasium courts, and of course a brand new state of the art 850 seat theater which will include classrooms for music, dance and drama! There is also a new ventilation, heating and air system being installed, along with small learning community spaces such as the Robotics lab and Business Center.
We look forward to the completion of this project and the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony that will be sponsored by Mr. Mark Hovatter, the Chief Facilities Executive for LAUSD.
On Friday, May 4th. 2018 we hosted our annual College Signing Day. It was a total success and even bigger and better than previous years!! We're excited that Local District West was present to support our festivities. This is served as a defining moment in our College Bound Cougars education experience. We're excited that our students are matriculating to institutions of higher learning.
This year has been huge for our very own legendary Coach Robert Garrett! Announcing the Chargers 6th Round pick (191st overall pick) will be 2017 NFL Don Shula Coach of the Year and our Crenshaw High School Head Football Coach along with members of our State Champion football team. Nominated for the NFL Don Shula Coach of the Year by the Chargers, Coach Garrett led the Crenshaw High Cougars to an impressive 12-3 record and a 2017 CIF Division 4-AA State Champion title. Coach Garrett’s success on the field is matched by his outstanding role as a mentor to young student-athletes. He is also the former coach of two current Los Angeles Chargers players, linebacker Hayes Pullard and defensive tackle Brandon Mebane.
Crenshaw Students were given the honor of attending the Breaking the Barriers Conference held at Dodgers Stadium. Each year April 15 marks the anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier in baseball in 1947. Honoring this
important event, the Breaking Barriers Essay Contest is a chance for diverse students of all backgrounds to share their personal stories about how they use Jackie Robinson’s nine values to face their own barriers.
Crenshaw BET Magnet students had the opportunity to attend the VEI Global Business Summit in New York City! The Youth Business Summit brings together thousands of rising young professionals and budding entrepreneurs from over 40 countries, educators, school/district administrators, business leaders and industry professionals for a one-of-a-kind global convention. During a dynamic week of business competitions, leadership events, and professional networking, rising talent from middle and high schools around the world display the professional skills and business acumen they have developed by running a Virtual Enterprise company during the school year.
On Friday April 6th, nearly 40 community organizations, colleges, and employers attended the 2018 Crenshaw High School Career Fair. More than half of the Crenshaw students attended the event and learned about exciting vocational and career opportunities.
We will have our last official meeting of the school year, tomorrow at 5pm in the Parent Center. We want to thank all of the council members who gave their time to ensure that Crenshaw made the best decisions with the budget and the Single Plan to increase student achievement.
