Crenshaw BET Students Take on NYC!

Crenshaw BET Magnet students had the opportunity to attend the VEI Global Business Summit in New York City! The Youth Business Summit brings together thousands of rising young professionals and budding entrepreneurs from over 40 countries, educators, school/district administrators, business leaders and industry professionals for a one-of-a-kind global convention. During a dynamic week of business competitions, leadership events, and professional networking, rising talent from middle and high schools around the world display the professional skills and business acumen they have developed by running a Virtual Enterprise company during the school year.

School Site Council Agenda

We will have our last official meeting of the school year, tomorrow at 5pm in the Parent Center. We want to thank all of the council members who gave their time to ensure that Crenshaw made the best decisions with the budget and the Single Plan to increase student achievement. We Build

On March 22nd, Crenshaw students participated in "We Build", an event sponsored by LAUSD Small Business Program along with the SoCal chapter of The National Organization of Minority Architects. Their mission is to champion diversity in the Architectural and Engineering professionals.

Honors Assembly and Parent Conference Night

On 3/15 we honored 133 students for making the Honor Roll. In addition to those students, 66 students also made it on the Principal's Honor Roll list, meaning they achieved a GPA of 3.5 or higher for the fall 2017 semester. We also had 6 students who were awarded for being in our "E Club", as they received all E's in all of their classes for work habits and cooperation. Following our Honors Assembly we had parent teacher conferences and distributed report cards.

Pi Day!

This year Crenshaw students had a very successful educational experience surrounding National Pi Day on 3/14 & 3/15. Lead by Math Department Chair, Dr. Ashford, the celebration for Pi Day was full of fun interactive activities such as bracelet making, graphing the sky line, t-shirt making, circumference of an oreo, and more. Each student received a mini pie as a reward for participating.

Crenshaw Marine Biology Adventure!

Last month Crenshaw students boarded a boat in Marina del Rey and set out to sea on the voyage of educational Marine Biology adventures with Reef Check Foundation. This trip was a highly interactive marine conservation course, taught by trained marine scientists that gave the opportunity to our students the chance to become marine biologists for the day. During the cruise, we watched dolphins and whales. Students used a microscope to observe living plankton swimming across the computer screen. Students also learned how to test the chemical properties of seawater to determine pollution levels.

Sprint 1 Million Project!

Sprint in partnership with LAUSD, wants to donate 1 Million free hot spots and computers to Title I students across the nation. We were able to distribute 24 Google chrome books with hot spots, back pack and earpieces on March 7, 2018. We look forward to serving more students next year.

Crenshaw High Goes Vegan!

On Thursday, February 22nd Crenshaw partnered with special guests Vegan Outreach to educate faculty, students and parent about healthy eating and vegan meal options. Founded in 1993, Vegan Outreach is a 501c3 nonprofit organization working to end violence towards animals. They plan community food sampling events, guided vegan grocery shopping tours and humane education for different middle schools, high schools and colleges across the country.

Vegan enthusiast Chef Corby, discussed with the stakeholders the importance of using organic, natural ingredients, growing your own food in a garden if possible, and how you can spiritually connect to the earth through gardening. They provided vegan tacos using jackfruit in place of meat, lentils and coconut flour tortillas. He also made a cashew based sour cream, a vegan hot sauce and used arugula.

Approximately 50 students, staff members and parents attended this workshop and had an opportunity to sample vegan tacos and other meal items. There was a lot of positive feedback, and students such as student Alejandra M. said “The food was very flavorful, and I am surprised that I really enjoyed it”. Teacher F. Hardridge said, “I guess I won’t be so closed minded when it comes to vegan options because this is actually very tasteful”. One parent, Ms. S. Smith said, “I don’t think I would have every given something like this a try because I don’t have money or food for my kids to waste, but look…they’re loving it. Maybe I can try to incorporate a dish or two into my dinner rotations for the week and see how it goes.”
