The basketball team while winning city titles could not win state. The football and baseball teams goal were to make the playoffs. Crenshaw was the fashion capital of the city...the sport of choice was Track & Field. The Track Stadium was packed week after week to the point that The Sierra Boys Academy brought cheerleaders from The Saint Marys Girls Academy to a track meet. Crenshaw won by the way. Prior to 1982 no sports team at Crenshaw had won a team championship greater than city. In 1981 & 1982 Crenshaw High's Track and Field teams placed second in the city...however also in 1982 the Track & Field Team won The California State High School Championships. What does this mean? Basketball no, baseball no, football no...Track & Field was Crenshaw High's first sport to win "State" although basketball has more state titles it was track & field with the 1st in school history which started the trend. Basketball maybe be best known, but it was track & field that lead the way. Please recognize that team, winning a state title in the most competitive state in the country is a huge accomplishment.
