Description
This course covers a range of "tradigital" computer animation principles from traditional stop-motion, 2D drawn and vector-based styles, through 3D Computer Generated (CG) applications.  The pursuit is to tell vibrant, original, and entertaining stories through the medium of short movie animation.
 
You'll do best in this class if you foster a desire to be expressive through writing and drawing, to collaborate with peers by freely sharing ideas and techniques, and consistently do more than the minimum asked of you.

Introduction to the ANIMATED .GIF

PART I - RESEARCH & WRITING (30pts)
Investigate and record the following information in type (copy & paste within your email):
(1) What is an animated .gif (what are they used for, how are they made)?
(2) Find & copy 10 examples of animated .gifs onto your blog (cite the source).
(3) Who are some famous digital artists that have made animated gifs (find, show a photo example of, and describe at least 3 artists)
 
PART II - ANIMATED GIF TUTORIALS (30pts)

TUT 2 - FRAME ASSEMBLY TO ANIMATION (30pts)
Download Mr. Webb's SneezeAnimation.zip and Splash-frames.zip folders with hand-drawn animation.  Make a separate Photoshop document for each folder, import the frames into Photoshop to make an animated .gif.

PART III - CREATING YOUR FIRST ANIMATED GIFs (90pts)

- Design 3 animations based upon 10 or more frames of action.

OPTIONAL EXTRA CREDIT (50pts) - Sexual Health Awareness Poster Entry
1. Research Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) that can spread through skin-to-skin contact, including: a.) the NAME, b.) Gestation period [between infection and symptoms], c.) Typical Symptoms, and d.) Treatments. Collect data on at least three types of infection. (20pts)
 
2. Choose one of the three infections to visually examine in your poster design.  Develop 5 potential layouts of the information researched, each poster should include an electron-microscope or modeled view of the contagion, and each of the factual insights from step 1 (above). (30pts)
 
TO EARN CREDIT:  You must submit your potential layouts, from part 2, AND take a picture of your final poster - submit it via email to: [email protected] by or before the due date for your class period.
This assignment will replace missing credit on a past assignment with partial credit, or worth 30pts (whichever is higher in value).

Research and Replicate 2 Action Cycles.
Task 1. Google search two action cycles.  Copy Images onto your blog, with captions explaining what action is being shown, and the source url of your image.
 
Task 2. Use the action cycle images as inspiration to create a new rendition of the movement using the web app: www.abcya.com/animate.htm
Post your finished .gif files onto your blog and email them to [email protected].

Storyboarding a Poem - In this project we will find a poem online and attempt to visualize parts of it, sequentially.  In doing so, we will produce a storyboard of imagery that can be translated into animation with transitions from one boarded image to the next.
(Additional details to follow in-class.)
 
Task: Complete Three (3) storyboards, each corresponding with a poem obtained from the internet by Friday, Oct. 30th.
