Introduction to the ANIMATED .GIF

PART I - RESEARCH & WRITING (30pts)
Investigate and record the following information in type (copy & paste within your email):
(1) What is an animated .gif (what are they used for, how are they made)?
(2) Find & copy 10 examples of animated .gifs onto your blog (cite the source).
(3) Who are some famous digital artists that have made animated gifs (find, show a photo example of, and describe at least 3 artists)
 
PART II - ANIMATED GIF TUTORIALS (30pts)

TUT 2 - FRAME ASSEMBLY TO ANIMATION (30pts)
Download Mr. Webb's SneezeAnimation.zip and Splash-frames.zip folders with hand-drawn animation.  Make a separate Photoshop document for each folder, import the frames into Photoshop to make an animated .gif.

PART III - CREATING YOUR FIRST ANIMATED GIFs (90pts)

BRANCHES OF GOV'T - POSTER #3 LEGISLATIVE BRANCH

TASK: Plan & design an original (US paper sized) poster that contains all of the following information in progression about our bicameral Legislative Branch.

-The title: Branches of Government - Legislative Branch
- An image of the U.S. Congressional building
- Map of the US that illustrates the current number of members of the House of Representatives.
- Indicate the number of Representatives each state is allocated to the Senate.
- An image of the Great Seal of the US Senate and the Great Seal of the US House of Representatives
- Picture of the current SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE, listing that person's name, party affiliation and state in which he or she represents.
- List three bullets explaining differences between the House and the Senate
- Include a respectable image of the US flag (not dirty, torn, ragged, modified, or shown inverted).
- The current salary of congressional reps, and senators.

DIGITAL ARCHITECTURE EXERCISE # 1
Design an architectural collage based upon the multiple existing forms of buildings, doorways, windows, roofs, and other man-made shelters found in pictures on the internet.  
 
In Photoshop, your document size should be US Paper - Legal-sized (width: 14in x height 8.5in)
 
Your architectural collage should: 1.) fully fill up the page, 2) have at least 3 different building elements (or draw upon three different images), 3) be a recognizable structure - with a roof, entry way, and living space - but be different from ordinary structures seen today.

OPTIONAL EXTRA CREDIT (50pts) - Sexual Health Awareness Poster Entry
1. Research Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) that can spread through skin-to-skin contact, including: a.) the NAME, b.) Gestation period [between infection and symptoms], c.) Typical Symptoms, and d.) Treatments. Collect data on at least three types of infection. (20pts)
 
2. Choose one of the three infections to visually examine in your poster design.  Develop 5 potential layouts of the information researched, each poster should include an electron-microscope or modeled view of the contagion, and each of the factual insights from step 1 (above). (30pts)
 
TO EARN CREDIT:  You must submit your potential layouts, from part 2, AND take a picture of your final poster - submit it via email to: [email protected] by or before the due date for your class period.
This assignment will replace missing credit on a past assignment with partial credit, or worth 30pts (whichever is higher in value).

Design a US Paper (Letter w: 8.5in x h: 11in, 300dpi) sized poster about the Judicial Branch of the United States Government that shows all of the following:
 
1) The title: SUPREME COURT OF THE UNITED STATES (SCOTUS) 2015
2) A portrait photograph of each justice of the court (in their robe)
3) Each portrait should be labelled underneath with:
     a.) the name of the justice,
     b.) the law school he/she graduated from,
     c.) the graduation year
4) In the background, include:
     a.) A picture of the U.S. Supreme Court Building
     b.) The SEAL of the US Supreme Court
5) Within the image should be a respectable image of the American flag (meaning - the flag must not be shown upside down, with any dirt or blemish, or torn and ragged)

(2) Title: PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES (POTUS)
(3) A picture of the SEAL of the POTUS
(4) A picture of the current President and Vice Presidents of the United States,
with their appropriate names and titles beneath their photos.

Part 2. (30pts)
Make a blog post with 10 or more images of campaign poster designs, obtained from the internet. (Please site your sources under each image)
On a piece of paper that you will turn in, sketch 5 potential layouts for each of your 3 posters that indicates:
- a picture of the candidate
- the candidate's slogan, or a quote stated by the candidate
- the candidate's party affiliation
- three essential issues supported by the candidate
- arrangement of shapes and colors
 
Part 3. (50pts)
Complete your three poster designs in Photoshop, and post the finished work on your blog.

Task: Follow the in-class demonstration by Mr. Webb, then create 3 original ANIMAL MORPH designs of your own in Adobe Photoshop.
 
Create each of the following:  1.) An animal that lives on land, 2.) An aquatic animal, and 3.) An animal that looks apparently capable of flight.

Research the Designer Scott Robertson.  (See Wiki article here)
Collect a minimum of five pictures created by Robertson to post and cite on your blog.
Write a one page essay examining the following:
- In what ways does Scott Robertson's design style look visually distinct when compared with artwork we've seen from Daniel Simon (Cosmic Motors) and Bobby Chiu (Imaginism Studios/Schoolism)? Give as many specific details with clear descriptions as you can.
- How does having a clear understanding of design methods make an artist better?  In what ways can it negatively impact the work of an artist to have seen the work of other designers?
- Explain how practice and focus sharpen the skills of an artist, and investigate how long each of these artists we've examined have been perfecting their craft.

Next, look at the sample Photoshop document by Scott Robertson.
 
Using the Photoshop help file and Internet resources (including Google Search). explain how the image is made of layers.  Try to figure out (and describe) what each layer is doing, or how it is related to image as a whole.
 
Of course with your writing assignments, you should always include an introduction and conclusion paragraph. However, please use spelling, punctuation and grammar checks before publishing your blog entry.
