Read the "Book of Job" in either The King James ot The Standard Revised Bible and Rabbi Harold Kushner's When Bad Things Happen to Good People. The former presents a traditional Jadeo-Christian explanation. After reading and comtemplating Job's story and Kushner's book, write a well-organized essay (1,000 words) on the cause of undeserved suffering in the world. Use specific quotations from both texts to establish and support your thesis statement. In addition, "Use evidence from your observation, expieriences, or reading to develop your position." (AP Exam) The most obvious reading references would be King's "Letter from Birmingham Jail," Weisel's "Night," Wright's Black Boy and Sophocles' Antigone.
*Please note: Only a final draft will be submitted. It should be a tightly written essay reflection all of the previous handouts and discussions on essay writing and revising. Be sure to revise for fluent and elegant language, varied syntax and elevated diction, as well as the more mundane mechanics. ABOVE ALL REMEMBER YOUR PURPOSE. Then employ figures of speech and rhetorical strategies appropriately to reinforce your opinion.
